Treasonous Releases of Diplomatic Documents Threatens US Security Interests Worldwide

Wikileaks needs to not only be taken behind the woodshed and thrashed to the fullest extent of the law, but all those who work in connection with the organization and those who have leaked the 250,000 diplomatic caches to the entity need to be brought up on charges of treason and possession of diplomatic documents and other classified documents.

These document releases threaten the national security of the United States and our diplomatic efforts worldwide. This is on the heels of a previous release of military documents that threatened US interests in Afghanistan and Iraq - which contained unredacted information that put the lives of those who worked with the US in jeopardy of being targeted for reprisals.

Wikileaks claims that they are in the business of releasing classified government documents from around the world, but their overwhelming focus has been on the undermining of US national security and diplomatic efforts of and by the US.

The US State Department is in damage control mode as they're trying to scramble to figure out who the leaks are coming from, what those documents could say and who might be offended by the documents and analysis - both among our allies, potential allies, and our foes.

The scope of these most recent diplomatic documents is breathtaking in the damage that has been done and cover most of the last three years - pretty much running from the end of the Bush Administration to the present:
The cables, a huge sampling of the daily traffic between the State Department and some 270 embassies and consulates, amount to a secret chronicle of the United States’ relations with the world in an age of war and terrorism. Among their revelations, to be detailed in The Times in coming days:

— A dangerous standoff with Pakistan over nuclear fuel: Since 2007, the United States has mounted a highly secret effort, so far unsuccessful, to remove from a Pakistani research reactor highly enriched uranium that American officials fear could be diverted for use in an illicit nuclear device. In May 2009, Ambassador Anne W. Patterson reported that Pakistan was refusing to schedule a visit by American technical experts because, as a Pakistani official said, “if the local media got word of the fuel removal, ‘they certainly would portray it as the United States taking Pakistan’s nuclear weapons,’ he argued.”

— Gaming out an eventual collapse of North Korea: American and South Korean officials have discussed the prospects for a unified Korea, should the North’s economic troubles and political transition lead the state to implode. The South Koreans even considered commercial inducements to China, according to the American ambassador to Seoul. She told Washington in February that South Korean officials believe that the right business deals would “help salve” China’s “concerns about living with a reunified Korea” that is in a “benign alliance” with the United States.

— Bargaining to empty the Guantánamo Bay prison: When American diplomats pressed other countries to resettle detainees, they became reluctant players in a State Department version of “Let’s Make a Deal.” Slovenia was told to take a prisoner if it wanted to meet with President Obama, while the island nation of Kiribati was offered incentives worth millions of dollars to take in a group of detainees, cables from diplomats recounted. The Americans, meanwhile, suggested that accepting more prisoners would be “a low-cost way for Belgium to attain prominence in Europe.”

— Suspicions of corruption in the Afghan government: When Afghanistan’s vice president visited the United Arab Emirates last year, local authorities working with the Drug Enforcement Administration discovered that he was carrying $52 million in cash. With wry understatement, a cable from the American Embassy in Kabul called the money “a significant amount” that the official, Ahmed Zia Massoud, “was ultimately allowed to keep without revealing the money’s origin or destination.” (Mr. Massoud denies taking any money out of Afghanistan.)

— A global computer hacking effort: China’s Politburo directed the intrusion into Google’s computer systems in that country, a Chinese contact told the American Embassy in Beijing in January, one cable reported. The Google hacking was part of a coordinated campaign of computer sabotage carried out by government operatives, private security experts and Internet outlaws recruited by the Chinese government. They have broken into American government computers and those of Western allies, the Dalai Lama and American businesses since 2002, cables said.

There are very good reasons why these kinds of documents remain classified - because they go to the heart of negotiating tough situations like with North Korea or the Middle East. They include unvarnished analysis and game situations such as the collapse of the North Korean regime and what various other countries might do.

At this point, even some who had previously worked with Wikileaks are now critical of the group and are demanding that criminal prosecutions take place because they're putting lives in danger. In fact, it's one of Julian Assange's cofounders of Wikileaks that holds the organization in contempt for its blatant disregard for the law.

Then again, some of those documents aren't exactly a surprise. One such document notes the ties between Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs. Other documents point to Jordan and Saudi Arabia calling on the US to take action against Iran - in light of Iran's nuclear ambitions. That latter release shows how these documents can affect the strategic balance in the Middle East and further complicate efforts to contain Iran and North Korea among others.

Julian Assange and the other people working for Wikileaks must be held to account for their supernational effort to undermine US national security. Their actions are fully within the scope of 18 USC 794 and 18 USC 798, which relates to the disclosure of classified information. Further, Congress should undertake a review of those relevant statutes to specifically include leaks of information that can benefit terror regimes and foreign governments when not specifically and directly transmitted - that Internet posting is sufficient such that any regime seeking to obtain an advantage of the classified documents can view these documents online.

Got the Traitor: Adam Gadahn Captured In Pakistan UPDATE: Or Not?

Score one for the good guys (if true - see below). Adam Gadahn, an American citizen who decided to become an al Qaeda spokesthug in Pakistan, was captured by Pakistani authorities in Karachi. He faces charges in the US for treason - the first US citizen to face those charges in more than 50 years:
The American-born spokesman for al-Qaida has been arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in the southern city of Karachi, two officers and a government official said Sunday as video emerged of him urging U.S. Muslims to attack their own country.

The arrest of Adam Gadahn represents a major victory in the U.S.-led battle against al-Qaida and will be taken as a sign that Pakistan, criticized in the past for being an untrustworthy ally, is cooperating more fully with Washington. It follows the recent detentions of several Afghan Taliban commanders in Karachi, including the movement's No. 2 commander.

U.S. officials did not immediately confirm Gadahn's capture.

Gadahn has appeared in more than half a dozen al-Qaida videos, taunting and threatening the West and calling for its destruction. A U.S. court charged Gadahn with treason in 2006, making him the first American to face such a charge in more than 50 years.
I can't wait to hear how he was finally captured, and how and why the Pakistani forces moved when they did. There's definitely a story there as to how his capture came to pass.

Bill Roggio
notes that he was captured in a Mehsud dominated neighborhood in Karachi, which makes sense given that the Mehsud clan is among the most loyal of al Qaeda's Taliban accomplices.

Given the number of captures and kills in the past couple of weeks, it definitely looks like the intel is having a multiplier effect, particularly with the Pakistani forces who are taking it to the Taliban and al Qaeda.

UPDATE:
CBS is reporting that it wasn't Gadahn after all. That's even as other media outlets are reporting that the ISI captured Gadahn in Karachi. MSNBC says that US intel officials aren't sure who was captured or whether it was Gadahn.

The NY Times notes that it wasn't clear whether the CIA was involved in the operation.

Once again, it looks like media reports from Pakistani sources have outstripped the facts on the ground. One can only hope that they do get it right and that Gadahn pays for his crimes.

UPDATE:
It's possible that there was another American captured and that they had similar Islamicized names to Gadahn - one Abu Yahya Mujahdeen Al-Adam. The BBC claims that the person captured was an Egyptian American who goes by the name Abu Yahya Azam.

American Jihadi From Long Island Involved in Afghanistan Attack

Rep. Peter King has gotten into hot water because he's said that mosques on Long Island are under investigation for jihadi activities. Local law enforcement has said that they do not have any investigations underway, and the FBI has said that they do not investigate mosques. They only investigate individuals.
On Monday, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called on the FBI to "confirm or deny" King's claim that Long Island mosques were under law enforcement surveillance. The FBI, while not addressing King's comments, said its investigations target individuals, not organizations. "The FBI does not investigate mosques or other houses of worship," spokesman James Margolin said in a statement Monday.
I read that as a nondenial denial. Let that be the case, all while the FBI continues investigating individuals participating in jihad that meet in mosques on LI. The FBI isn't going to jeopardize its investigations into jihadi activities because of King's statements or inquiries into the same.

Meanwhile, why is all of this an issue? Well, it looks like a former Long Island resident who went and converted to Islam went to Afghanistan to engage in jihad:
Bryant Neal Vinas, who converted to Islam at a Long Island mosque, was arrested in Pehsawar, Pakistan after trying to kill GIs in the September 2008 attack.

Court papers also revealed that Vinas provided al Qaeda with "expert advice and assistance" based on his "specialized knowledge" of New York's subways and the Long Island Rail Road.

The documents, filed in Brooklyn federal court, didn't tie Vinas to a specific plot against the transit systems.

But last November -- about the time Vinas was captured -- federal law enforcement officials warned the NYPD and other authorities about a possible al Qaeda conspiracy to blow them up.

An intelligence bulletin warned city officials that the FBI had received "plausible information" that al Qaeda discussed terror attacks on the city subways and other transit systems in September.

Vinas -- who also used the names "Ibrahim," "Bashir al-Ameriki" and "Ben Yameen al-Kanadeea -- has been cooperating with investigators, both American and European, since his arrest.
The NY Times reports that he's helping prosecutors with two terrorism cases in Europe.

There's no word on whether Vinas was charged with treason, which might be applicable given the circumstances provided thus far.

UPDATE:
The Bergen Record has some more detail about what Vinas is doing these days.
Authorities revealed Wednesday that an American — charged with giving al-Qaida information on the New York transit system and attacking a U.S. military base in Afghanistan — has been a secret witness in the fight against terror both here and overseas.

Court papers unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn identified the defendant as Bryant Neal Vinas, also known as "Ibrahim."

His identity had been kept secret since his indictment late last year. Court papers indicate that he pleaded guilty in January in a sealed courtroom in Brooklyn.

Federal prosecutors refused to discuss his background Wednesday. But a law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case, said Vinas provided critical information that led to a security alert about the New York City subway system last year.

Federal authorities issued an alert around Thanksgiving last year saying the FBI had received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that al-Qaida terrorists in late September may have discussed attacking the subway system around the holidays. The origin of that report, the official said, was Vinas.
It certainly sounds like he's singing like a canary to avoid more serious charges.

UPDATE:
The Jawa Report has much more details, including a possible photo, and a copy of the indictment, which all points to charges of treason, but for the singing like a canary about possible operations against the US and Europe.

Specifically, 18 USC 2339 relates to providing material assistance to terrorists, including details relating to the operation of the LIRR.

It also appears that Vinas got the jihad bug from attending the Islamic Association of Long Island in Selden.

Former GOP Congressman Indicted For Funding Terrorism

A former congressman and delegate to the United Nations was indicted Wednesday as part of a terrorist fundraising ring that allegedly sent more than $130,000 to an al-Qaida and Taliban supporter who has threatened U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan.

The former Republican congressman from Michigan, Mark Deli Siljander, was charged with money laundering, conspiracy and obstructing justice for allegedly lying about lobbying senators on behalf of an Islamic charity that authorities said was secretly sending funds to terrorists.
He was a representative from Michigan's Fourth Congressional District from 1981 to 1987. He was subsequently selected by President Ronald Reagan to serve as alternate representative to the United Nations General Assembly.

If these charges pan out, he should be sentenced to the maximum sentence. It's somewhat surprising that he wasn't brought up on charges of treason considering that he was actively funding sworn enemies of the United States.

UPDATE:
More on his background here.

UPDATE:
He's facing a 42-count indictment in federal court in Kansas City.
A 42-count indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., accuses the Islamic American Relief Agency of paying Siljander $50,000 for the lobbying _ money that turned out to be stolen from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Siljander, who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, was appointed by President Reagan to serve as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations for one year in 1987.

He could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

The charges are part of a long-running case against the charity, which was formerly based in Columbia, Mo., and was designated by the Treasury Department in 2004 as a suspected fundraiser for terrorists.

In the indictment, the government alleges that IARA employed a man who had served as a fundraising aide to Osama bin Laden.

The indictment charges IARA with sending approximately $130,000 to help Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, whom the United States has designated as a global terrorist. The money, sent to bank accounts in Peshawar, Pakistan in 2003 and 2004, was masked as donations to an orphanage located in buildings that Hekmatyar owned.
UPDATE:
A couple further points. He's been a lobbyist since he left government and the charges are directly related to his lobbying efforts. These charges also go back to 2004, and I can only hope that the prosecutors in this case learn a bit from the Holy Land Foundation debacle and have a rock solid case against him and his cohorts.

UPDATE:
Also, isn't it interesting how you don't have to play name that party?

UPDATE:
Debbie Schlussel weighs in on her former boss and is shocked and appalled.
Mark enlisted me to help him write a tough bill espousing sanctions against the Soviet Union because of its persecution of Soviet Jews. And he enlisted my help in pro-Israel and anti-PLO legislation.

That's why it's so hard for me to read that he may have played for the opposite team--for the enemy.

I'm truly shocked. And I hope it's not true. But--while I have a lot of distrust in the Department of Justice--on this one, I think there must be something there.

If Mark Siljander was helping Islamic terrorists against America, then no-one is immune from doing it. If true, it's extremely disappointing and demoralizing to me.
UPDATE:
Michelle Malkin and Jammie link. Thanks!

Macranger points out that Siljander helped found Global Strategies, Inc., which is a major security protection outlet.

Rusty at the Jawa Report has the press release on Siljander's indictment.

Hizbullah Offers Israeli MK Bishara Asylum in Lebanon

Israeli Knesset Member Azmi Bishara is suspected of passing secrets on to Hizbullah, especially during the Hizbullah war last summer. And now comes word that Hizbullah is offering him asylum in Lebanon.

Where to start with this. Consider that Hizbullah is a terrorist organization and that they launched a devastating war that destroyed billions of dollars of Lebanese infrastructure, cost the lives of hundreds of Lebanese civilians because Hizbullah purposefully fought in and among civilian areas, and launched thousands of rockets into Israel to kill as many Israelis as possible.

Now, they're offering Bishara asylum becuse Israeli law enforcement and security has discovered that Bishara was passing secrets on to the very terrorist group that continues to threaten Israeli national security?
A senior Hizbullah official said Thursday that a former Arab Israeli MK accused by Israel of aiding the Shiite group during last summer's war would be welcomed as a political refugee in Lebanon.

Israel has accused Azmi Bishara of tipping Hizbullah about possible targets during the 34-day conflict when the Shiite guerrillas fired thousands of rockets towards the Jewish State.

"Should Azmi Bishara decide to seek political asylum here, we will welcome him on Lebanese soil," said Dr Ahmad Mali, a member of Hizbullah's political council.

Bishara left Israel for a tour of Arab countries three weeks ago and submitted his resignation from the Knesset at the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.

While he was away rumors surfaced that he was being investigated for a number of security offenses, but a gag order on the probe prevented access to the nature of his offenses.

After a court lifted the gag order this week, it was revealed that the former Balad MK was suspected of receiving large sums of money from a foreign agent for transferring intelligence and giving strategic advice to Hizbullah.
This isn't about political asylum - it's about prosecuting a traitor and someone who undermined Israeli national security. How many Israelis lost their lives as a result of the information passed on to Hizbullah and how many Hizbullah thugs were able to avoid being eliminated by Israeli forces as a result of Bishara's acts? Bishara's actions undermined Israeli national security and he must be dealt with accordingly.
