Rip Tide: UPDATE: Death From Above As Well

This summer has been particularly devastating for families who decided to go swimming at NYC area beaches. We've seen an uptick in the number of people who have drowned as a result of being carried out to sea by dangerous rip tides. Four people drowned, and three others remain missing at beaches in the NYC metro area. Several others were rescued by lifeguards.

Those rip tides are the result of storms churning up the ocean out to sea, and swimmers attempting to get back to shore by swimming directly in against the current. They exhaust themselves and drown.

The best defense against being carried out to sea, besides not going into deeper water, is to stay calm and swim parallel to shore so that you can swim out of danger. This way, you don't exhaust yourself fighting against nature - nature always wins.

There is currently a moderate risk of rip tides, so only experienced surf swimmers should venture out into the waves.

UPDATE:
As if the rip tides weren't dangerous enough, it turned out to be a very deadly day along the Jersey Shore and Long Island beaches and parks as lightning strikes killed one person and wounded several others.
