Much has been made in the past about how the Matrix movies glamorized gunplay and some have even suggested such movies were responsible for giving impressionable young folks the idea to go around shooting up their schools.

It happened in the aftermath of the Columbine massacre. It happened in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech massacre.

However, Mrs. Lawhawk and I have wondered if these kids had watched a movie that actually touched on all aspects of the school massacres - Heathers - a movie that shows loners or outsiders looking to gain some measure of revenge against their classmates.

The bad boy in that movie, James "JD" Dean and played by Christian Slater, was a sociopath who thought nothing of killing overachievers to make them look like suicides to help his girlfriend, Veronica Sawyer (and played by Wynona Ryder) get ahead, and then decided to blow up his high school to make some grand statement.

In the end, he blew himself up as Veronica looked on.

The movie dealt with a revenge fantasy - watching the popular kids get offed and the malcontents and backbenchers get ahead in the process.
