Serrefine

That's the word that 13-year-old Evan O’Dorney spelled correctly to win the National Spelling Bee. Congrats!

He won a trophy (which was almost bigger than he was), a $35,000 prize, a $5,000 scholarship, a $2,500 savings bond and a set of reference works.

So what exactly is a serrefine?

serre·fine (sâr-fn, sr-): n.
A small spring forceps used for approximating the edges of a wound, or for temporarily closing an artery during surgery.
