And just as with Gilad Shalit, I am not optimistic that we wont have a third, fourth, fifth, etc., anniversary commemoration as friends and family commemorate the capture of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev by Hizbullah.
Today marks the second anniversary of the capture of Goldwasser and Regev by Hizbullah, sparking the Lebanon war two years ago. Both men are still held by Hizbullah and are likely dead.
Hizbullah now has tacit control in Lebanon securing a veto option in the government just days ago. Lebanon will suffer for this as Syria and Iran have both successfully thwarted a democracy in the country. Israel's leadership under Olmert engaged in a half hearted war with Hizbullah that did not achieve any of its goals and which squandered IDF's tactical and strategic advantages because the government would not commit fully to defeating Hizbullah and destroying the rat lines between Lebanon and Syria.
The situation in the wake of the war left Hizbullah bloodied but standing so that they could not only claim victory, but that they could stand up against UNIFIL and tell them to shove it as they continue to rebuild their damaged terror infrastructure and facilitated a political crisis that led to Hizbullah obtaining a veto say in the government. For all intents and purposes, Hizbullah now gets to say what Lebanon does going forward.
