Last night we tried the Ho Ho Kus Sushi Cafe, located at 29 Sheridan Avenue in the heart of the Ho Ho Kus business district. This quaint cafe, down the block from JJ Stallings Jewelery Store (which has many unique pieces of antique and modern vintage), doesn't look like much outside, but the quiet understatement inside belies a tremendous find.
The sushi is excellent. Presentation is quite good and the wasabi provided with the various dishes is among the hottest I've tasted, which is a good thing.
I've long held that Sushi Sakura Bana in Ridgewood is the sushi restaurant by which other New Jersey sushi restaurants is judged. The Sushi Cafe gives it a run for the money.
Among the unique dishes are a series of vegetarian presentations, which is a boon to Mrs. Lawhawk, who doesn't like fish. This opens up a range of choices for her beyond the standard teriyaki or tempura presentations offered at many other Japanese restaurants. I'd put Sakura Bana's fish quality and teriyaki a slight notch above the Sushi Cafe, but the Sushi cafe's wider assortment of vegetarian dishes and more unique specials make this a close call.
If you want a quieter dining experience - not to mention the chance at getting a seat - Ho Ho Kus Sushi Cafe is not to be missed.
