Human Rights Watch slams the Palestinians for their misogyny and utter lack of interest in affording women the protections that we in the US take for granted. Rapists get to run free, and women worry about being beaten to a bloody pulp for violating family honor.

A new report presents an alarming picture of the abuse of women in the Palestinian territories, with police, courts and government agencies failing to treat violence such as rape and beatings as a crime.

Human Rights Watch cited practices such as rape victims being forced to marry assailants and light sentences for men who kill female relatives suspected of adultery. In a report released Tuesday, the rights group said families, tribal leaders and authorities, backed by tradition and discriminatory laws, often sacrifice victims’ interests for “family honor.”

And the problem is getting worse with growing poverty and lawlessness in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the New York-based group said.

And Israel isn't even raised as an issue. Who knew!?

Palestinians women are in extremely dire straits, but yet they think nothing of answering the call of Hamas to become human shields - becoming cannon fodder in the fight with Israel.

If Palestinians are going to improve their lot, it will have to start with the treatment of women. That is going to be a key indicator. Hamas wants to turn back the clock, while Fatah is content with the current situation.
