The Obligatory Rail Tunnel Safety Posting

Today we get word that the NYC subway terror threat is no longer considered credible. Whew. I'm sure that's a great relief to the tens of thousands of commuters who are dealing with a fire/smoke condition in one of the tunnels under the East River.

How is that safety campaign going to improve safety features in the rail tunnels that crisscross the NYC region? It isn't. The hundreds of millions needed to provide safe egress for the Hudson River rail tunnels hasn't been provided, which puts tens of thousands of commuters at risk on a daily basis. Yet, Alaska gets the money for a bridge that might one day service a few hundred people.

That makes a whole lot of sense. Did anyone from the NY/NJ delegation think to include that in the pork projects they brought home? Didn't think so.

UPDATE:
CNN is reporting that the NYC subway threat was a hoax. Fully expect the loony lefties to complain and say it was all part of a conspiracy to divert attention from the Bush Administration troubles. Ah.. yeah. But not - since the DHS was downplaying the story from the start and the NYPD was operating on its own based on the information that was passed to it by the federal government.

The NYPD erred on the side of caution, which is precisely what I would hope any law enforcement agency and politician would do when faced with a threat that is specific as to time, place, and manner - for the one time that the threat isn't taken seriously that results in an attack.
