Name That Party: NYC DUI Edition

The car was moving erratically, weaving in and out of lanes on the West Side Highway in the early hours of Thursday, the police said, in a scene that soon seemed to belong in a cynical Hollywood movie about the rise and fall of a political dynasty.

There was an assemblyman at the wheel of a rented sedan, who emerged from the car to tell the police, “I had a few drinks, but I’m not drunk,” according to a prosecutor in court Thursday. There was a woman in the back, either asleep or unconscious, law enforcement officials said.

The assemblyman was Adam Clayton Powell IV, whose father, the Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., represented Harlem in Congress for three decades and was so popular that he survived a corruption scandal before being unseated by Charles B. Rangel, now the dean of New York’s delegation.

It was the third brush with the law in four years for Assemblyman Powell, 45, who weathered allegations by two women that he got them drunk and then raped them in 2004. No criminal charges were filed in either case.

Thursday, Mr. Powell was charged with drunken driving in Manhattan Criminal Court. His lawyer, Stacey Richman, said he was not guilty, and refused an offer by the Manhattan district attorney to agree to a $1,000 fine, the revocation of his driver’s license for a year and five days of community service.
Here's a hint about his political affiliation. He's not a Republican.

UPDATE:
Jammie also notices the media's failure to denote Powell's political affiliations.
