Subway Series Game One

Mrs. Lawhawk and I attended the game last night (and anonymous emailer was at the game as well). It was a very well played game. Good pitching and some timely hitting by Endi Chavez proved to be the difference. Mets won 3-2 and the crowd at Shea went nuts.

Our Loge section featured quite a raucous bunch of passionate fans and things were pretty good natured. Ribbing between fans from both teams was lively - as should be expected. However, there was one ugly incident as the game came to a close. Some idiot Met fan decided to clobber someone else (the guy was wearing a Delgado jersey) and security came out in force to pull the Met fan out. What came next was quite entertaining as that Met fan then proceeded to throw at least one punch at the security guards and cops who came to intervene. The crowd started to chant "Lock Him Up" and I think we got our wish.

Throwing punches at the cops and security? That's a bad move no matter what you were doing before. I also got the sense that the guy was drinking heavily before this incident (go figure). What a mo-ron.

As for the results of the game; the Yanks are now 10 games out. That's quite a lot of games to overcome as it's getting late in the season very early. This is something new to many Yankee fans who have only known winning titles and world championships. I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong with the team, but if the team gets good pitching, they're not getting timely hitting. If they get hitting, the pitching lets them down. Boston doesn't look like they're going to fade anytime soon, so things look like they may get ugly in short order. It's the kind of malaise that Roger Clemens will not fix. They need to get some kind of energy and spark that has been missing. They also need to get some of their players to start hitting.

The Mets are now two games up on the Braves in the NL East. They're playing well and getting good pitching and good hitting. The Braves have had some injuries of late and the Mets have been fortunate to be mostly healthy. The Mets look like they'll be in the race for the NL East title to the end.
