Sadr Flees; Is Surge Working?

The leader of the militant Islamist group, the Madhi Army in Iraq, Moqtada al Sadr, has fled Iraq and ended up in Iran, according to various reports. Curious that he thinks that he's safer in Iran than staying in Iraq. He bailed out two to three weeks ago.

Could it have something to do with the extra US troops that are either already in country or those on the way that will put a serious hurt not only on Sadr's thugs, but could go after Sadr directly?

Would this not indicate that the surge is working or at least producing some positive results since Sadr has been a thorn in the side of the Iraqi government for far too long and his militias have prevented the Iraqi government from exercising full control over areas within Sadr's sphere of influence including parts of Baghdad? To quite a few bloggers, that would be a yes: Gay Patriot, Powerline, Ed Morrissey, AJ Strata, Hot Air, Redstate, Blackfive, and Blue Crab Boulevard.

Sadr has shown himself to be no better than Sir Robin from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He runs away at the slightest risk to his personal safety. If he flees, what must his followers think? Can and will the Iraqi government and US exploit this information to the fullest? To defeat the insurgency and the militias, they must.

Yet, we've got our elected leadership in Congress debating the merits of the surge, even as it is underway and showing results. They're quite busy working on non-binding resolutions while troops are in harm's way. Lovely stuff. Politics as usual while soldiers are slogging in the field working their magic against an enemy that exploits every soundbite and uses them as their own.

Speaking of Congress, it would appear that Speaker Pelosi has a math problem. Have we been in Iraq five years? That's what she said on the floor of Congress, yet we've only been in Iraq since March 2003. That would be one month short of four years. Via Mark Levin (who broadcast the clip on tonite's show).
