Mohammed 'Most Popular' Name in UK

With the rapidly approaching birth of my own baby girl (our first), I thought this article was pretty interesting.

Mohammed and its alternate spelling Muhammad have overtaken such stalwart monikers as George and Joseph on the list of the most popular name for boys born in England and Wales.

There have been 2,833 babies named Mohammed born so far this year, and 1,422 named Muhammad, for a total of 4,255 – compared to 3,386 Georges and 3,755 Josephs, the Telegraph reports.

The popularity of the Prophet’s name reflects "the diverse ethnic mix of the population,” according to the Telegraph.

The name Mohammed alone is more popular than Henry, Edward, Michael, Adam and Charles.

It doesn't surprise me that England has seen a rise in baby namings of Mohammed or Muhammed. It reflects the changing culture and the rise of the Muslim population in England.

According to Blonde Sagacity:,
Here in the States, Mohammed ranked down at 622 in 2005 (and that is up from #493 in 1999). It will be interesting to monitor Mohammed ascent or decent in the years to come. Jacob and Michael are still the top names.

I agree with her that it will be interesting to note the frequency of Mohammed and Muhammed for new borns over the next few years. I also seem to remember after 9/11 a plethora of reports of parents naming their kids Osama.

Personally, Mrs. Legalbgl and I chose a nice sensible name, Baby Legalbgl. Somehow we thought it appropriate.
