Sign of the Times

Why are so many folks thinking that today has some kind of significance beyond the fact that it marks the 62nd anniversary of D-Day? Operation Overlord? You might have heard of it - back when they were teaching history in high school.

Today is June 6, 2006. That would be 6/6/2006 to those of you who aren't paying attention. Yet, for some reason, folks want to believe that today is really 6/6/06, which would be somewhat more significant since the number 666 is the sign of the Anti-Christ, which we all learned from the movies. Hence, the movie The Omen is opening today.

Of course, if you wanted to really play with gematria or numerology, the real date of 6/6/6 would have taken place in the first century AD. 2,000 years ago.

Or, you could say that 6/6/66 or 6/6/666 are more auspicious dates, since they require no fiddling with the year to result in the 6-6-6 combination. Yet the media has quite a few stories about today's date, along with reports that schools are concerned about potential Columbine-style attacks today.

UPDATE:
Blackfive has a roundup of blogospheric reaction and remembrances of D-Day.

And it should also be pointed out that today marks the 64th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, which changed the course of the Pacific campaign and marked the limits of the Japanese expansion in the Pacific.
