Snowstorm 2006

The weather outside isn't frightful - it's positively delightful if you love heavy snow, blowing and drifting snow, and high winds.

We've gotten at least 16-17 inches of snow here in North Jersey. Waldwick, New Jersey which isn't too far away had at least 21 inches of snow. And it's still falling.

Roads have been plowed fairly regularly, but with the rate of snow falling, it's tough for the municipalities to keep up with keeping them clear. Not that it matters all that much as the snow clearing service hired by our landlord hasn't made their way over to plow out our parking area.

New York City is struggling to keep up with the snow falling, although Mayor Bloomberg believes that the city will be fully open for business tomorrow. That doesn't mean that workers will be able to get into work from the surburbs which have been getting hammered.

UPDATE:
The snowstorm has dropped at least 22.8 inches of snow on Central Park, New York City. That's the second highest total in recorded history at the Park. The highest figure was from the Blizzard of 1947, which dropped more than 26 inches.

UPDATE:
NYC Metro area snowfall totals are most impressive. You'll note that many of the snow totals are from much earlier in the day - so the final tallies will be much higher in some areas.

UPDATE:
The Gothamist has more coverage from NYC and links to flickr galleries of photos taken from around the City.

UPDATE:
The NYT has a major update, but doesn't include the latest snow totals. It looks like this storm may yet beat the previous record for snowfall at Central Park, which was set in 1947.

UPDATE:
It's official. 26.9 inches at Central Park beat the old record of 26.4 set back in 1947. Kids shouldn't worry though. New York City public schools will probably be open tomorrow as usual. New York City schools don't close for anything - not even massive record setting blizzards. However, alternate side parking is suspended (Lincoln's birthday - celebrated tomorrow although it is actually today).

The NYC government portal is a good place to check for updates. NYC area airports are open, but no flights are arriving or departing because runways are closed. Check with your air carriers before even thinking of driving to the airport.

More photos of the snowstorm can be found through the WCBS880 website.

UPDATE:
Sorry kiddies - the NYC schools will be open as Monday, but no field trips - those have been cancelled.
