MLK Day - 20 Years Later

Today is the 20th anniversary since Martin Luther King Jr. day was first established. It started out with the most noble of goals - to honor the memory of Dr. King and the civil rights movement.

Now? It's another day for crass commericalism. Notice all the sales associated with today?

We see it all over the place. It started long ago, and not just with MLK day. We saw it happen when Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12) merged with Washington's birthday (Feb 22) to form President's Day (Feb 20). Not a day to honor two of the most important people in this nation's history, but one for commercialism and shopping. It's not that I'm opposed to commercialism, or even crass commercialism, but something is lost in the translation from a day of remembrance for important people and events to a day where folks only know that it's a day where you might find a bunch of good sales at your local stores.
