Save the Date
I will be making another appearance on Joe Salzone's Blog Bunker show on Sirius Radio Channel 110 this coming Friday. My segment will air live from 5:30 to 6:00PM. Legalbgl might also join in if he can make it.
Unfortunately, Sirius suits have decided that people can't receive transcripts and that the only records available are audio tapes of the segments and those can't be provided to those appearing on the show either. Silly policy. It's called advertising and if you want to expand your exposure, you want to make it easier to get people hooked on your product that way.
As a matter of fact, on our recent trip to Arizona, we rented a Dodge Avenger from Enterprise, and it came equipped with free Sirius radio. It's pretty neat to get a solid channel of rock music that Mrs. Lawhawk and I could both enjoy without annoying commercials and that was available throughout our entire 1,000+ mile drive.
So, if you want to hear my appearance, you'll have to get your hands on a Sirius radio and tune in to channel 110.

Back in the Saddle
Well, sorry about the short hiatus, but this is our anniversary weekend (St. Patrick's Day), and we managed to get away to the Long Island wineries for some R&R. I'll post some of my observations and food reviews over the next few days, along with some photos taken out at Orient Point (the furthest point on the North Fork).

On the Radio: UPDATED AND BUMPED

Well, if you've ever wondered what legalbgl and I sound like, it looks like you're going to get your chance. We've been asked to appear on Sirius Radio's Blog Bunker program this Friday in the 5:30-6:00pm slot on Indie Channel 110.
UPDATE:
Bumped to the top as we'll be making our radio debut tomorrow evening. If you don't have Sirius, you're going to be out of luck, unless someone happens to get their hands on a Sirius feed. We'll hopefully be able to post a transcript after the show.
The host of the show is Joe Salzone. And Brendan Loy is on in the preceding slot? Cool. He was at the forefront of Hurricane Katrina coverage and on hurricane blogging in general and have linked to him when those issues come up.

Congrats Are In Order
Congratulations to the winners of the 2007 Weblog Awards. The complete list is here.
And I guess that means I'm congratulating myself, since I won the category Best of 1751-2500. I was in some pretty good company within that category and I'm a regular reader of Armies of Liberation and Texas Rainmaker.
I would have had something witty to say except that the WGA is on strike and I couldn't get Tina Fey or Jon Stewart to write my acceptance speech for me. Colbert was too busy not running for President to respond. So, all I can do is say thanks.
Thank you to everyone who voted and to everyone who reads A Blog For All on a regular basis. While I write primarily for myself - to keep my head from exploding with all these random bits of information, I enjoy the feedback I can get from blogging. That means that everyone who contributes here gets to share in a piece of the congrats.
That also means that Legalbgl gets a pat on the back as well. He's been a regular feature here for a couple of years and has stood in when I've gone off the 'net. Kudos!

Walking the Walk
While we get nonsensical ravings from Elizabeth Edwards over how she'll give up buying tangerines to save the environment, or listen to Al Gore pontificate on carbon emissions as he's caught stepping off a Gulfstream IV private jet that pumps out more emissions on a single flight than most people do in a year, I'm undertaking a far more comprehensive move to go green.
I've bought a house in Radburn, New Jersey. I know what you're thinking. How is buying a house a green step?
Well, the first step is knowing where Radburn is and what makes it a pretty special community. It was one of the first planned communities in the US and it was specifically designed to minimize the need for driving cars. Indeed, the layout is conducive to walking, not driving. You could go from your house to the community pool and school without ever having to cross a street. Everything is designed to minimize the need to drive, and indeed the streets in the development are narrower than you'll find in most suburban communities because cars are not emphasized in the plan.
Cars are almost an afterthought in the community, and the area's motto is "A Town For the Motor Age." That compact design means that it emphasizes a communal feeling and you can actually walk to most basic services. Driving is not required.
We were attracted to the area because of its close proximity to New York City, while maintaining a bit of a suburban feel.
I will be able to walk to the train which is just over a quarter mile away. Previously, I had to drive two miles, park in a commuter lot, and then walk 10 minutes to the station. Not having to drive and find parking is a big improvement and will also mean I'm not driving as much - big bonus there.
As for the house itself, it has a brand new oil burner, which means that it's about as efficient as one can get for that kind of heating system.
The house needs a new roof, and I'll pick one of the lightest colors available so that it reflects back most of the sun's heat and energy instead of absorbing it - reducing energy needs during the summer. That's a decision that will last 20-30 years, so you will see an ongoing energy savings with a simple color choice. If you have to install a new roof, choosing the lightest color available is an energy saver and a no-brainer.
A new insulated garage door will also make the house airtight. Right now, there are beautiful wooden carriage doors on the house, but they're not exactly airtight and are probably original to the house. Replacing those doors with a two inch insulated door with weatherstripping will cut down on energy bills. Replacing other doors at some point will further improve the look of the house and improve our home's comfort.
Another simple and cheap solution is to install CFLs around the house. I've been using CFLs around our apartment, and we'll be using them a whole lot more in the house. I'll be putting them in as necessary. I also intend to get an energy audit by PSE&G to further improve the house. Automatic thermostats are going in and my carbon footprint will go down considerably.
I'll be checking all the plumbing fixtures and putting in low-flow shower heads - which will reduce the water consumption and hot water heating costs. A new water heater will be needed at some point, and while I've considered a tankless system, which would save a considerable amount of energy costs because you don't have to keep the tank of water warm until it's needed, I think we'll go with a high efficiency standard water heater with the 15 year warranty since they provide a good balance between efficiency and cost.
All these things, excepting the roof, are relatively cheap to do, and will save a boat load of money and reduce emissions considerably.
Can you say the same about Edwards or Gore? I doubt it. They'll continue jetting around the country and emitting COx in far greater quantities than I could do in several years. They could do us all a favor by ceasing their campaigning and pontifications - just do it for the environment.

My apologies to loyal readers
As many of you have noticed, this blog was not updated for several days. The reason is that Lawhawk has taken Mrs. Lawhawk on a well deserved second honeymoon to France. If memory serves, France was the intended destination of their first honeymoon, but they changed their plans after the events of 9/11.
It has been up to me to keep the faithful informed in Lawhawk's absence. However, as Lawhawk posted a few weeks ago, Mrs. Legalbgl and I were been blessed with the arrival of a baby girl on February 24. Since then life has been a whirlwind. No sleep nights, lots of work during the day, and to boot, an emergency trip to the animal hospital in the middle of the night for doggy legalbgl. Needless to say, I have not had much time in the last few weeks to post anything.
Well, rest assured, that Lawhawk's absence is short lived and I will endeavor to post more in the meantime. I thank you all, the loyal readers, for your continued readership.

Kvelling

Legalbgl and I have been friends for 20 years now, and we've been through thick and thin. With Mrs. Lawhawk, I introduced him to his wife, and so it is with great happiness that I want very publicly congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Legalbgl on the birth of their daughter; their first. She was born earlier this morning and mom and baby are doing well.
May they watch their daughter grow up to be happy, healthy, wise, and bring Mr. and Mrs. Legalbgl nothing but happiness and joy and nachas. Mazel tov!
