The nanny staters who think that bikini wax jobs (Brazilian waxes) should have no place in New Jersey are claiming that such services result in injuries and that it is the place of the state to ban such activities.
If that's the threshold for taking action, then why not shutter the state's ski resorts? Football fields? Baseball fields? In other words, why not shutter pretty much any and all athletic endeavor.
After all, we've seen in just the past week the kind of injury that one can sustain while skiing: Natasha Richardson died after sustaining what appeared to be a minor fall on a beginner's ski slope during a lesson. Every season there are people carted off to hospitals for broken bones and torn up knees and other body parts from taking serious falls on the slopes.
What makes the Brazilian wax so ripe for plucking? Is it because it would show that these do-nothing legislators are taking action on behalf of one or two of their aggrieved constituents? That's the only thing I can think of.
One of the women who claims to have sustained an injury has filed suit against the people who provided the services. That's appropriate as the facts may warrant. Legislating this service out of existence is not.
UPDATE:
Wax on Brazilian waxers.
According to the AP, NJ Consumer Affairs Director David Szuchman said he wouldn't support the ban (the Consumer Affairs division oversees the Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling) and suggested that the board instead look at training and safety protocols for spa and salon workers. In NJ, only waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms are permitted; genital-area waxing is not explicitly prohibited.
