Original Carvel Ice Cream Shop Closes

Carvel ice cream is one of my all time favorites, and the original store in Hartsdale, New York was forced to close after being hit with ever rising taxes. The store originally opened more than 70 years ago when Tom Carvel's ice cream truck broke down one day on that spot in town and started doing excellent business. The rest, as they say, is history. The chain now has outlets nationally and its ice cream can be found in supermarkets across the country.

Fudgie the Whale, Cookie Puss, and other characters became staples of the ice cream chain:

It's sad to see this pop icon finally close.

The owners plan on building a restaurant on the spot.
