The Rebuilding of Ground Zero, Part 40

The core slowly rises.

That's the core for the Freedom Tower, which is slowly rising to street level as it looks today. The steel and concrete will support the massive structure above. At the moment, concrete work has been delayed due to a strike of concrete truck drivers, which has affected work sites throughout the City.

Here's how the Freedom Tower looked 11 months ago:

It's the virtually identical angle, so you can see just how far we've come since the first photo was published in August 2007. This photo actually shows a closeup of what the site looked like in August 2007, and you can see that there's been quite a bit of preparatory work done since then.

Still, it is remarkable at the lack of progress at Ground Zero when compared with the Goldman Sachs building next door. A year ago, the building was perhaps 15-20 stories tall.

Today, the tower's structural steel has been completed for months now and it is being clad in its final glass skin. This is how the Goldman Sachs building looked at the end of April as it was being topped out.

And you wonder why I continue posting on the slow pace of construction and exhort those involved to get it done.
