It would appear that Mugabe's end game is to die in office. He refuses to accept democratic elections, and would rather see his country burn than to give up power in a democratic election. Newsweek appears to downplay the violence and official death toll as mild in comparison to the violence seen in other countries suffering from dictatorial power grabs. Nice. Stay classy Newsweek.
Yesterday, former South African President de Klerk came out against Mugabe. So did Nelson Mandela. Mugabe returns the favor by saying that Mandela was simply bowing to Western pressure. Mugabe also complains about the loss of his knighthood and blames the British Prime Minister.
Right. 165,000% inflation, 80%+ unemployment, millions starving, and a democracy in tatters has nothing to do with the criticism.
For his part, Morgan Tsvangirai ought to hope that the world does more than shun Mugabe. Shunning hasn't gotten Mugabe to give up his iron grip on the country, and which has forced Tsvangirai to seek refuge in the Dutch embassy over the ongoing threat to Tsvangirai's life.
