While other cities around the world have long had public toilets, New York City lagged well behind in that valuable service. Today marks the first public toilet going live.
It will take some getting used to in how the toilets work for New Yorkers unaccustomed to having such a luxury where they would have to sneak into a McDonalds or other restaurant when nature calls.
The toilets aren't in operation 24/7, but rather from 8AM to 8PM. Users will have 15 minutes to complete their business (alarm given at 12 minutes to alert user that doors will open). After the doors open, they will again close for a 90 second cleaning cycle.
