The job search is on for someone to be responsible for the fact-checking department at The New Republic. Bob Owens wonders whether this is directly related to the Beauchamp mess, but it in no way excuses the multiple failures of the organization in the Beauchamp affair.
He's right, of course, to question the timing and the operational failure of the editorial staff at TNR. They stonewalled when faced with a growing mountain of evidence showing that their writer, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, lied, exaggerated, or omitted key details, and then selectively produced updates on their "investigation" that omitted details showing Beauchamp's mendacity and undermined TNR's credibility.
