Epic

Just as Met fans began to think that they might still have a chance after yesterday's scintillating performance by John Maine, everything came undone in the blink of an eye in the first inning of today's game. The Florida Marlins crushed Met fans dreams of the playoffs as they tagged Tom Glavine for seven runs in 1/3 of an inning.

The Phillies won their game today, which means that the Mets will be making golf plans and cleaning out their lockers at Shea while the Phillies get ready for the playoffs.

It was one of the most epic collapses of all time, rivaling the Red Sox collapse of 1978 (to the Yankees), the Cubs collapse of 1969 (to the Mets), and even the Yankees collapse in the playoffs to the Red Sox when the Yankees were up 3-0 in the League Championship Series.

The Mets had been up seven games with just over two weeks to play. They lost the lead, managed to tie things up after yesterday, but lost it all today.
