It should only be a few more weeks before Sen. John McCain (R-Az) is able to put his presidential ambitions out of our collective misery.
Many will try to paint his collapse in the polls and lackluster fundraising on his support for the war in Iraq, but there is a direct correlation between his flagging support and his push to bring forth the immigration bill that doubled as an amnesty program for millions of illegal aliens.
His assault on free speech may also play a role in his difficulties.
Three more campaign aides quit this morning. He's had to cut back on his staffing, and all signs point to a withdrawal from the race as other GOP candidates push ahead with strong fundraising and will begin picking through the scraps of the McCain campaign for staffers and ground support. Those most likely to benefit? Rudy and Fred (if he ever bothers to enter the race - maybe end of the summer?) Mitt might also benefit.
