Palestinian gunmen from Gaza broke throughThe Palestinian terrorists are hoping to capture another Israeli soldier so that they can use him as a bargaining chip to secure the release of hundreds or thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli jails.
Israel's border fortifications on Saturday and battled Israeli troops near an army post, the military said, in the first such incursion in a year.
Israeli Army Radio said troops killed one of the raiders but suffered no casualties themselves in the firefight, near the Kissufim crossing between Gaza and Israel.
The military denied Palestinian claims that a soldier was captured in the raid and said soldiers shot one of the attackers but the extent of his injuries were not immediately known.
Saturday's raid was the first cross-border incursion since Gaza militants killed two soldiers and kidnapped a third a year ago.
The Islamic Jihad group said it carried out the attack, along with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas'
Fatah movement.
Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, told local radio stations that four militants broke through the Gaza border fence and launched an assault on soldiers. He said three of the militants returned to Gaza unharmed, but a fourth, an Islamic Jihad militant, was unaccounted for.
That is what they hoped to accomplish with the capture of Gilad Shalit, and they haven't given up trying. Shalit remains held by the Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.
Note that last part about who was involved. It wasn't simply Islamic Jihad, but Fatah's own al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade. The whole belief that Fatah is a moderate terrorist group is nothing more than a charade as the facts show a totally different picture.
The IDF meanwhile, continues operations inside Gaza.
UPDATE:
Some reports are indicating that the Palestinian terrorists used a jeep mocked up as a UN vehicle, while others claim it was mocked up as an Israeli military jeep.
The gunmen used an armored jeep with United Nations markings to ram the border post, according to Abu Ali, a spokesman for the Al Aksa brigades. Other reports said the jeep was disguised to look like an Israeli army vehicle. It would be interesting to see what photographs of the scene are produced, and whether the terrorists used a vehicle with UN or IDF markings. However, in either case, the Palestinians are clearly trying their best to try and kidnap other Israeli soldiers to be used as pawns in yet another attempt to secure the release of Palestinian terrorists held in Israeli jails.
UPDATE:
The Jerusalem Post is now reporting that the vehicle the Palestinian terrorists used in the attack on Israeli troops was marked TV. They posed as journalists.
Let me repeat. The Palestinian terrorists involved in the latest attack on Israelis posed as journalists. The terrorists attempted to camouflage their true intentions by purporting to be journalists so as to get close enough to the Israeli troops before opening fire.
The IDF foiled an attempt to kidnap a soldier on Saturday afternoon.
Four Islamic Jihad gunmen infiltrated Israeli territory from the Kissufim border crossing between Israel and the central Gaza Strip and attacked IDF troops stationed in the area.
The gunmen were traveling in a jeep marked 'TV', in an attempt to camouflage their true intentions.
One terrorist was killed in the ensuing gun fight, while three others managed to flee the scene. No IDF troops or Israeli civilians were wounded in the attack. The IDF was searching the Israeli side of the border to ensure that no terrorists remained in the area. According to the IDF, the early detection of the terrorist squad helped prevent a catastrophe.
Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, told local radio stations that four members of the terrorist group broke through the Gaza border fence and were clashing with soldiers.
"It is difficult to storm (the area). But when they entered in a surprise, they confused the enemy," he said.
Palestinian security officials confirmed that four militants were clashing with IDF soldiers.
