JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The United States and Israel on Sunday agreed to keep a ban on financial aid to the new Palestinian government but a rift emerged over Washington's willingness to ease a year-old diplomatic blockade.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ruled out resuming talks on Palestinian statehood with President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah and appealed to the international community to shun the government until it recognizes Israel and renounces violence.
Israel has vowed to boycott the new government in its entirety, including non-Hamas ministers. But the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem said Washington, in a shift in policy and a rare break with the Jewish state, would permit limited contacts on a case-by-case basis with ministers who are not members of Hamas.
Palestinians hope the partnership between Abbas's secular Fatah faction and Islamist Hamas will stop factional fighting and ease a crippling aid embargo that has increased poverty.
Well I am glad the financial aid ban remains in effect. I do not beleive US tax dollars should go to "governments" of "countries" that have vowed to kill us and our closest allies.
However, I am disappointed in the move to open diplomatic discussions with Fatah. Lets not forget, Fatah is only moderate as compared to Hamas. It was not that many months ago that Fatah was running the show and committing murder up and down Israel. This is certainly a situation where the enemy of my enemy is my friend, but the "friend" in question is still our enemy. Fatah can not be trusted to ensue an agenda of peace. Fatah will no more recognize Israel than Osama Bin Laden would become a productive member of American society. Fatah are the bad guys. Abbas is a murderer and should be given no more political recognition than Charles Manson!
