I don't think there's a lamp post or tree branch high enough from which to hang Saddam Hussein for all his crimes against the Iraqi people. Hundreds of thousands of people are dead as a result of his genocidal ways. The environmental damage done during the Gulf War and the fight against the Marsh Arabs was extreme and generational in the time remediation.
Yet, it is the mass graves that one must return to in order to understand what was gained by deposing Saddam.
The Iraqis and US are clamping down on security ahead of the decision that is forthcoming moentarily on the first of what will likely be a series of war crimes trials. This particular verdict is for the deaths of more than 100 Shi'ites in Dujail.
Saddam's supporters warn of a wave of violence should the verdict of death be issued. And that's opposed to what we're already seeing from his nominal supporters, jihadis, insurgents, and jihadis who are making lives miserable for Iraqis. The Times Online quotes Ramsey Clark, who has never met a dictator or thug he didn't like, saying that a death sentence would fuel conflict in Iraq for decades. Sure. The numbers say different.
Malaki says he hopes Saddam gets what he deserves. The dead deserve as much.
But hey, Saddam has told his lawyers he doesn't fear death. How comforting to know. After all, he had no problem sending hundreds of thousands to their deaths, so he should know what it's like to be on the other side.
