They're getting the band back together. Well, not everyone in the band.
Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford are regrouping to tour next year. Original band members Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel are not involved. That's too bad. Seeing the original lineup reform would have been incredible. I loved old Genesis' complex sound and moods. Much of that was attributable to Gabriel, who had a pretty good career thereafter as a solo artist.
Collins turned out to be a pretty good lead singer, but his start in the band was behind the drumkit. He's one of the better drummers of the past 30 years.
I saw Genesis in concert on the Way It Walks tour (NYT review here). They played a medley of their older hits, and from the sound of it, they'll be playing a lot more of the real old stuff, and not simply their hits off Mama, Invisible Touch, and We Can't Dance.
The following is a video of the full band performing In the Cage live:
And yes, that's Peter Gabriel underneath the makeup.
This is a live performance of a drum duet between Collins and Chester Thompson, who is Phil's drummer on tour as seen on the Way we Walk tour:
Technorati: genesis, phil collins, peter gabriel, mama, duke, turn it on again, invisible touch.
