UrspracheNow, there's a word you don't hear every day. In fact, I'm sure that quite a few spell checkers wont be able to find it in their dictionaries.
SYLLABICATION: Ur·spra·che
PRONUNCIATION: rshprä
NOUN: See protolanguage.
ETYMOLOGY: German : ur-, original (from Middle High German, out of, from Old High German; see ud- in Appendix I) + Sprache, language, speech (from Middle High German sprche, from Old High German sprhha).
It was also the winning word in the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The winner was Katharine "Kerry" Close, a 13-year-old speller from Spring Lake, New Jersey. She won in the 20th round. Congrats!
