Iran Threatens To Withdraw From NPT

As if to add insult to injury, Iran threatens to leave the NPT, although there's no reason to believe that the NPT is actually preventing Iran from not only going nuclear, but well into the process of acquiring nuclear weapons.

This isn't just about the mullahs trying to have nuclear power for civilian purposes, but enriching uranium for nuclear weapons. They don't want any interference in their nuclear program, and all the signs point to a weapons program, not a civilian program.

Their nuclear facilities are hardened against air strikes - some are buried underground.
''This is a typical Iranian threat. It shows they remain desperate to conceal that their nuclear program is in fact a weapons program,'' he said. ''I'm confident that these statements from Iran will not deter the sponsors of the draft resolution from proceeding in the Security Council.''

Iran's hard-line president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, also said the country might reconsider its membership in the NPT if pressure continues.

''If a signature on an international treaty causes the rights of a nation be violated, that nation will reconsider its decision and that treaty will be invalid,'' Ahmadinejad said, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

''If they (the U.S. and its allies) want to make incorrect decisions against Iran and issue statements and resolutions, they have to know that the Iranian nation will smash their illegitimate resolutions against a wall,'' he added.

The United States, France and Britain are sponsoring the U.N. resolution, which would allow sanctions -- or military action, if necessary -- to force Iran's compliance.
The US is trying to bring a resolution next week on the matter. It remains to be seen whether China or Russia will intervene on Iran's behalf.

Pam at Atlas Shrugs points out that the UN is continuing its utter uselessness and the IAEA shows that it won its Nobel Prize because of its stance against the US, not because it was actually doing its job. She also points to the Charles Krauthammer article on why Iran's nuclear intent is an existential threat to not only many within the Middle East, but specifically Jews living in Israel, where they have come together after centuries in the disapora and displacement following the Nazi Holocaust.
