The New York Times realizes eight months after Katrina hit that people in the Gulf Coast are relying on the local papers, the New Orleans based Times Picayune and the Biloxi-based Sun Herald for news and updates about Katrina related reconstruction and relief efforts.
Considering that the focus of the big media outlets has largely shifted away from the nitty-gritty of rebuilding with a major exception for the MSNBC online effort, locals have to turn to the local news outlets for information. Besides, the local papers know more about the situation than those outside papers, despite the hardships that the local papers encounter.
The two papers are major sources for my information about the relief efforts on the Gulf Coast and provide far more detail than the big media outlets provide. For those outside the region, relying on the New York Times to provide comprehensive coverage is not feasible.
