KB Homes, a Los Angeles-based homebuilder, officially announced Tuesday morning that it will build a 20,000-unit residential community on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish. If KB Homes or Shaw Group sounds familiar, they should. They're frequently featured on the hit ABC show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. These are huge developers who have the capability to get the job done. Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama will need quite a few more of these kinds of developments to provide permanent housing for those who lost their homes in the hurricanes. And they have the ability to get things done quickly.
In a news conference with local officials, KB Homes said it is partnering with the Shaw Group of Baton Rouge on the purchase of a 3,000-acre tract on which it will develop single-family homes, condominiums, townhomes and retail stores.
Other communities may benefit from KB Homes' involvment, including Slidell and Mandeville-Covington.
