Random Thoughts

The Plame Investigation and the Able Danger story are related to each other.

The media coverage is inversely proportional to their respective importance and national security implications.

Harriet Miers

I haven't blogged on this other than when her name was first released. This will be my second and probably final posting on the subject. Her inability to properly formulate responses to basic questions about constitutional law is quite troubling. One would hope that the person selected for the Supreme Court would be able to provide adequate responses. If I were the White House, I'd be seriously concerned about this nomination and have an eye towards a replacement that would hopefully reenergize the conservative base and get folks fired up. And it should be a nominee who would be at least as impressive as Roberts appeared to be in the confirmation hearings and the reports from the Hill in his look-sees.

I'd also remind the White House that there are some battles worth fighting, and a Supreme Court nomination is one case. However, fighting over a nominee who is apparently flawed is wasting political capital.

That's sound advice for any president.

UPDATE:
Jonah Goldberg notes that he thinks Bush has been playing both sides on the Miers nomination. Miers is a setup for another, better choice for the position. Yeah, that's one way to spin this. Another way is that this is wishful and hopeful thinking to get out of a bad situation. Besides, why would he inflict this rancor on Miers? Then again, Miers is such a trooper and loyal follower of Bush that this theory may have legs...
