Generation Why posits an interesting theory that has thus far not been picked up in the media - that the suicide bombing of John Heinrichs might be part of some larger Islamic terror offensive. In the past few days, we've seen an uptick in violent attacks in Iraq, the Bali bombing that killed 26 and wounded over 100, and the unveiling of a terror plot aimed at attacking the NYC subway system on October 9, 2005 (which coincides with the 5th day of Ramadan).
Are these separate and distinct terror operations or part of some larger planning. I think that because al Qaeda is a loose affiliation of terror groups with the same goals, the attacks, both planned and thwarted, appear to be part of a strategic move to show the world, and particularly the Muslim population, that al Qaeda still has global reach and the capability of inflicting damage.
At this point, we have a bunch of points on a map but no direct links between them. In fact, we aren't even sure that some of these incidents are related to Islamic terror. In particular, I'm referring to Heinrichs bombing, the bomb threat called in for a Rolling Stones concert, and bomb threats called in for Penn Station and various other threats around the world. We're seeing bomb threats everywhere.
UPDATE:
AJ Strata makes the strong case that the threats against NYC are tied to US successes in Iraq. It's also forced al Qaeda to try and clean up its murderous image - both among Muslims and Westerners. Too many beheadings and suicide bombings against crowds of Muslims looking for work aren't good for international recruiting.
