NY Legislators Padding Per Diems?

I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, but can anyone in the state legislature provide a good reason why so many members of the state legislature are receiving per diems far in excess of the amounts they received in each of the past two years. Overall, the legislature spent nearly $331,000 for the 4-week period in June-July. That compares with about $178,000 for similar periods in 2008 and 2009.

At a time when the state budget is nearly 4 full months late (it was due April 1, and we're fast approaching August 1), to see the legislature giving itself payments that exceed the amounts given last year or the year before suggests that fiscal insanity is the way of the halls of the Capitol building.

Instead of cutting back spending at a time when the state has no money, the legislature is more than comfortable spending more on per diems.

Per diems
