Smoke and Mirrors Hallmark of Albany Budget Process

New York faces a $9 billion deficit. So how can anyone rightfully expect that any cuts proposed by Gov. David Paterson (D) can be "restored" if there's no money to pay for them? Yet, that's exactly what the State Senate and State Assembly came up with.

Speaker Shelly Silver and Senate Majority Leader John Sampson restored hundreds of millions of dollars of cuts. How?

They don't say.

Don't you think that New York taxpayers have a right to know? Moreover, don't New Yorkers deserve to have a budget balanced without gimmicks and one-shots, which were all part of the reason that budgets grew to the point where they are no longer sustainable without a circus tent of tricks?

The latest budget extender isn't any better than the prior extenders, and the costs are simply unsupportable. New York must live within the existing revenues, instead of spending far more than revenues allow.
