10 Years Later: The Columbine Massacre

Ten years ago, two murderous teenagers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting rampage in Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. When they were finished, 12 classmates and a teacher were dead.

They are: Cassie Bernall, Steve Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Daniel Rohrbough, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, Kyle Velasquez, and Coach Dave Sanders.

Another 23 people were injured: Brian Anderson, Richard Castaldo, Jennifer Doyle, Stephen 'Austin' Eubanks, Nicholas 'Nick' Foss, Sean Graves, Makai Hall, Anne Marie Hochhalter, Patrick Ireland, Michael Johnson, Joyce Jankowski, Mark Kintgen, Lisa Kreutz, Lance Kirklin, Adam Kyler, Stephanie Munson, Patricia 'Patti' Nielson, Nicole Nowlen, Jeanna Park, Kacey Ruegsegger, Valeen Schnurr, Daniel Steepleton, Evan Todd, and Mark Taylor.

The massacre, like those that followed it, were quickly politicized on discussions of how the two killers got their weapons, and what, if anything, schools could do to prevent future incidents.

There were plenty of hurt feelings as some attempted to lump together the two murderers with their victims in tributes and the memorial to the massacre. Even today, how to memorialize and report on the story can and does run into trouble. Oprah Winfrey scrapped a taped show she did that was supposed to air today because she felt that it spent too much time focusing on the two murderers and not enough time on the victims. That was clearly the right thing to do, but one has to wonder why she didn't realize this at the time of the taping.
