This well regarded Ho Ho Kus staple in Bergen County is known for its well prepared meals and sumptuous desserts. The owner and chef, Janice, is on premises and makes the desserts herself, many of which are gluten free.
Our meal yesterday consisted of a fresh mixed greens salad, followed by braised short ribs and Mrs. Lawhawk had a pink peppercorn crusted duck breast accompanied by mashed sweet potatoes. The salad was lightly flavored with a hint of a vinaigrette, which is refreshing given that many restaurants will overly douse salads with dressings.
The duck was expertly prepared and extremely flavorful; the short ribs fell right off the bone and could be cut without a knife.
The server was well trained and gave us time to savor each of the courses, but the busboy could have given us more time before clearing the plates.
Dessert presented us with several favorable choices. I went with the profiteroles, which is a puff pastry filled with vanilla ice cream and covered with chocolate ganache. Mrs. Lawhawk's choice was a pistachio and iced lemon cake. Both were well presented and tasted even better.
Janice: A Bistro, isn't exactly cheap with entrees generally running above $20, but you're definitely not going to go away hungry. The desserts make sure that you come away with a sweet view of this cozy restaurant in the middle of town. In fact, it's the desserts that separate this restaurant from many others in the area as witnessed by the Bergen Record's recent review of desserts in local establishments. Janice: A Bistro came out with one of the best reviews of late.
