Last night's speech by Sen. John McCain paled in comparison to the electrifying speech by Gov. Sarah Palin, his running mate. Palin clearly relishes speaking before large crowds and has very good oratory skills. McCain is much less accomplished as a public speaker, but he did end the speech on a strong note.
That may not be enough. He's now got to deliver on his rhetoric. Just as the Obama-Biden ticket have to show what they're going to do to change the situation in Washington, the McCain-Palin ticket will have to show their hand as to what they envision for the US in the future.
They will have to address a souring economy, national defense, foreign policy, and all the other issues that people find important. McCain's pick of Palin was clearly designed to let McCain do what McCain has always done - run as a maverick and run counter to traditional GOP themes, enabling him to attract moderates, independents, and those dissatisifed Democrats who may still be stinging from the Clinton snub.
Palin, whose star power appears to be growing by the day, will be able to bring in the crowds and comfort the base as well as speak to issues like energy with a knowledge that Biden simply cannot.
The debates between the candidates will help flesh out the policy differences and help prove that the candidates have the mettle to be in the White House.
Good luck.
We are going to need it.
