Many knew him as the sultry smooth voice of Chef from the South Park cartoons or his soul searching music. My first encounter with Isaac Hayes was his turn as the Duke of New York in the John Carpenter movie Escape From New York. It was his voice that did it.
No one else had a voice like his.
He won Academy Awards and Grammys. He won the adulation of millions and started rap and disco before those terms were even invented. It was his theme music from the movie Shaft that won him his Academy Award, and his live performance on the Oscars is regarded as one of the most memorable moments from the show's history.
He was found collapsed in his home near a still running treadmill in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 65.
He will be missed.
