MSNBC is reporting that the Port Authority has made a deal with the St. Nicholas Church congregation to buy the lot on which the church stood before it was destroyed by the collapsing WTC on 9/11. However, the way the article is written, it makes it appear that this was a key stumbling block to getting the site developed.
That's not true by a long shot.
The church site is a small fraction of the larger problem - the building directly adjacent to the plot on which the church stood.
That would be the Deutsche Bank building, and it still stands as a hulking reminder of the failures of the LMDC, Port Authority and city and state officials to get that damaged building taken down so that the construction of the security/transit center could proceed, along with the infrastructure work necessary to move forward on the rest of the WTC projects.
Unless and until the Deutsche Bank building is taken down, none of the other projects can really move forward. Many of the delays stem from this singular failure. The Port Authority, LMDC, city and state all must shoulder the burden for their ongoing failures to rebuild in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.
