This week, the Port Authority began installing AEDs at the Christopher Street station. For those who aren't familiar with AEDs, they are automatic external defibrillators. They can save someone's life who have gone into cardiac arrest. They're fairly easy to operate and can cost a couple hundred dollars each.
Two of these units have been installed - one at each end of the platform.
Thus far, I haven't seen AEDs installed at Hoboken, though I would hope that they install them there and elsewhere in the system. This is one of those ideas that can save dozens of lives every year as people have heart attacks on their daily commutes.
It is surprising to see that the Port Authority isn't touting this latest development on their website as it definitely improves the safety of its patrons.
UPDATE 7/11/2008:
The Port Authority has indeed begun installing AEDs at Hoboken terminal. New Jersey Transit already has AEDs posted at several locations throughout their terminal as well.
