Restaurant Review: Ho Ho Kus Inn

The Ho Ho Kus Inn is a longstanding landmark in the heart of Bergen County. The town with the funny sounding name is home to some of the better restaurants in the county, and the Inn is the grande dame.

The historic building dates to the end of the 18th Century and is quite charming. There are several dining rooms spread over two floors and each is very nicely appointed. During the summer, there is a patio area as well, but the view is one of the main street (Maple Avenue, where it turns into Franklin Turnpike).

I ordered the seared Ahi tuna with microgreen salad appetizer along with a main course of rack of lamb. Mrs. lawhawk started with a salad of warm goat cheese over mixed greens, candied walnuts, and granny smith apples with lemon herb vinaigrette. Her main course was a special vegetable ravioli from wonton wrappers in a light sauce.

Our appetizers were quite good, as the Ahi tuna was deliciously fresh and barely touched by the heat - and the sesame seeds provided a nice crunch to offset the smoothness of the tuna. The vinaigrette over the microgreens was just what the doctor ordered, and it too was accompanied with a dollop of wasabi and pickled ginger.

Mrs. lawhawk's raviolis were quite tasty and included bits of asparagus and other vegetables - not merely a ravioli filled with puree. It made for a most interesting texture combination. My rack of lamb was good, and only wish that they had made it just past the medium I had asked for.

Dessert was a variation on a tartuffo; it was a vanilla gelato with topped with cocoa powder and almonds. This too was quite good.

Service was very good, and we were able to enjoy a relaxed dinner.
