After the Mets disastrous weekend, losing to the woeful San Diego Padres in excruciating fashion, Met fans are wondering whether manager Willie Randolph should be fired. Anonymous emailer, a sometime Met fan, thinks that he should be tossed today and pushes for a return of the man with the glasses and mustache costume - Bobby Valentine.
You can be sure that the talk radio stations in the NYC metro area are buzzing over the lost weekend, and who might come in to rescue the Met season. Wally Backman is one option as he's currently with the farm system, but I don't see either Gary Carter or Bobby Valentine coming to the rescue. Valentine loves being in Japan and Carter ruined his chances by speaking out of turn a few weeks back.
Many of the problems stem from having an older team and emptying the farm system to get Johan Santana, who has been good, but not necessarily the lights-out pitcher that people thought. Perhaps he's still adjusting to the strike zone and way the National League calls games, but Omar Minaya should be on the hot seat for making the roster moves that put together a team that has severely underperformed since July of last year. That includes the record-setting collapse last September.
The Mets outfield has been injury prone, combining the brittle Moises Alou and Ryan Church, who is suffering from post concussion syndrome after suffering from two concussions since the start of the season.
The players have to take responsibility as well for they have not performed as well as they should. Still, it is far easier to fire a manager than it is to fire or trade bad players, so Willie is likely to be gone before long. If the Mets continue their losing ways, he could be done by the weekend.
UPDATE:
Anonymous emailer writes to point out that Wally isn't with the team in any capacity.
