Vandals Defile Trees Planted To Memorialize 9/11 Victims

A crass, coldhearted thief has swiped 15 saplings planted last fall in a Bronx park to commemorate local victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The tree heist from Ferry Point Park, which comes after five of the black birch saplings were ripped out and thrown into nearby weeds late last year, has shocked park advocates and the dad of a World Trade Center victim honored with one of the young trees.

"If somebody removed them because they knew it was for people from 9/11, I would be very, very outraged," said John Lynch, whose 30-year-old firefighter son, Michael, died at the Twin Towers.

"This would be a very, very vicious thing to do," added Lynch, 72, who learned of the theft when another son visited the grove and found the trees missing.

"It would be evil."

Raising suspicions that the crime was motivated by some sick hatred is the fact that only trees from a special grove dedicated to victims from Throgs Neck were ripped out - and that the crook callously ignored signs indicating the trees' significance.

More than 3,000 other trees planted elsewhere last year in Ferry Point Park to honor 9/11 victims were unmolested.
Simply disgusting, and I hope that the authorities track down those responsible and deal with them accordingly.
