It's been five years since the Secaucus Transfer has been open, and the severely underutilized facility (only 8,000 use it daily) may get a serious infusion of riders once new parking lots are opened. The lack of commuter parking was a huge criticism when the facility first opened since it would get thousands of cars off the roads heading into Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel and onto NJ Transit for a 10 minute ride into Manhattan. With no parking spaces at the facility, the billion dollar train station serves less than 10,000 people a day (Mrs. Lawhawk being one).
It was built without commuter parking because of community opposition, but that opposition has softened. That doesn't mean that the plan has smooth sailing because Norfolk Southern would like to use the site meant for parking for its own train operations, which it claims would remove thousands of trucks off New Jersey roads every day.
