This campaign season appears to be defined by the campaign ads that are based on the 3 AM phone calls. Hillary released one this morning claiming that John McCain is doing nothing to help families who are in trouble because of the subprime/home lending woes. McCain snapped back with a pithy retort in this video:
He's got a very good point. The last thing you want to do is take still more money out of the hands of taxpayers when they need it most in order to help a choice few who made terribly poor decisions and lenders who were forced by Congress to issue bad loans in the name of increasing home ownership among those least capable of repaying those loans. Besides, giving that money to the least effective entity - the government, is no way to solve problems within the markets.
