Pakistan's Problems Continue

Are there links between the Bhutto assassination and the release of terrorists from GitMo? That's exactly what the Randall Hoven of the American Thinker suggests in his latest article.

One of those who was released because of "insufficient evidence" was Abdullah Mehsud. If that last name sounds familiar, it's because he's the brother of Baitullah Mehsud, who's been implicated in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
If these are the types of people already released from GTMO for insufficient evidence, what does that say about those still held there? They did not just happen to be in Pakistan or Afghanistan for a wedding. They lie, they kill, they torture. And they do it on scales that can topple governments and democratic movements, and that is exactly their intention. In short, they are as dangerous as anyone could possibly be. Yet critics of the U.S. want to set them free.
Musharraf says that Bhutto ignored warnings about the security situation and dismissed any government involvment in the assassination. People might trust him just a wee bit more had the Pakistani government not pressured doctors into making statements about the cause of death and blaming everything but the gunshot that killed her, along with the failure to conduct an autopsy under controlled conditions. Musharraf is also saying that the inquiry into Bhutto's death was unsatisfactory to this point, but he's got few to blame but his own government officials. Calling in Scotland Yard isn't going to help, unless you're going to exhume the remains and conduct a proper examination of the body to determine cause of death. Much of the physical evidence has been destroyed or removed in the course of the cleanup of the scene of the attack, so reconstruction of the events is difficult at best.

All this takes place with the backdrop of the postponed elections, which are now scheduled to be held February 18. Some groups are already planning demonstrations and fear that Musharraf may postpone the elections indefinitely. If the rioting and mayhem continues, it could become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

On the lighter side, it appears the media and some bloggers can't quite figure out how to fact check. Someone thought that Bhutto's son had a facebook page, but it was some wannabe poseur who created the page had anyone bothered checking things out. Dan Riehl has the details.
