San Francisco Looks To Tax Sugary Soft Drinks

Once again, the nanny staters in San Francisco think that they can have the right to change eating and drinking habits by taxing those items. The latest move is proposed by SF Mayor Gavin Newsome (D), who is proposing a tax on beverages high in fructose corn syrup.

Why stop there? Soft drinks are only part of it. How about high calorie items like those mocha lattes with whipped cream? Or why not tax the food consumed as well?

Demonizing the soft drinks is the easy way to go, but it's bad policy and it's undermining the public's right to choose. How about taxing anyone who consumes more than 2,000 calories a day, especially if those individuals do not exercise.

Newsome's plan is noxious not only because he's looking to raise taxes (and those who can ill afford tax hikes will be among those hardest hit by yet another regressive tax), but because he thinks he should impose his medical views on everyone else.
