Requiem for a Hero

President Bush awarded Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award given to a member of the US Armed Forces.

It was posthumously given to Murphy for his courageous efforts in Afghanistan and presented to his parents.

The New York Times finally saw fit to cover this story today, more than a week after other New York area papers and outlets did so. The story carried in the Times was good, but one has to wonder why it took so long to recognize the heroism and selflessness of Murphy in trying to get a message broadcast to get help in the face of vicious fire from Taliban that outnumbered his SEAL team by more than 25-1.

Actually, one doesn't have to wonder why. Two words sum it up: institutional bias.

Murphy knew what he was fighting for.
